Typography
I am working on a typography form that uses the "Kanji" characters in use in China, Japan, and other parts of Asia as a motif.
I change the shape of the lines the characters are made up of based on the context, using these modifications for my graphic design.
These context-dependent lines control the style, shifting the impression it gives from roughly similar to a modern gothic style to more reminiscent of a traditional Ming-style typeface.
My goal is to create a piece that eliminates this context from the Kanji characters, expressing the way they acquire meaning solely from the lines within them.
Although my pieces each represent a single character, and I have drawn each one with that character's meaning in mind, the meaning I have determined is not important.
I hope each person who takes the time to see them for themselves will consider the works and form their own impressions.
